The American Taekwondo Martial Arts Academy (ATMA) celebrated its milestone fifth anniversary on September 12, 2026, reflecting on half a decade of community impact, competitive excellence, and personal transformation under the leadership of founder Master Krishna Balal. Established to make Taekwondo accessible while fostering health, confidence, and personal growth, ATMA has evolved into a cornerstone for local martial arts development. Speakers at the anniversary event emphasized Master Balal’s philosophy of prioritizing community service and life-changing mentorship over commercial success, while the academy’s diverse team of masters and instructors was praised for imparting essential life tenets—courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable spirit—both inside and outside the dojang.

The academy celebrated a landmark year leading up to this anniversary, marked by prestigious achievements across regional, national, and international stages. ATMA competed in two online world championships, securing numerous medals alongside team-pattern gold trophies in both events, while Master Balal represented the academy as a referee at the World Championship in Italy.
Nationally, members earned medals in sparring, board breaking, and Poomsae at the Virginia and Pennsylvania AAU qualifiers, with numerous students advancing to nationals alongside successful medal counts at the KTA national championship. Beyond competition, ATMA hosted its inaugural inter-school championship, organized an adult and Black Belt referee training seminar, and gave back to the community through a blood donation drive that earned official recognition from U.S. senators, governors, and members of Congress.

Looking ahead, ATMA is maintaining its momentum with ambitious plans for continued growth and community outreach. Members are scheduled to travel to Vienna, Austria, for international instructor, technical umpire, and referee seminars to bring advanced knowledge back to the local family. Additionally, the academy is actively planning the first-ever American Open Taekwondo Championship, creating another wonderful opportunity to unite martial artists and families across the broader community.
