AUSTIN, TEXAS – As Nepal continues to recover from the devastating floods of August 27, members of the Nepali diaspora in Texas came together to honor the victims and support relief efforts back home.
United Nepal Football Club (UNFC) organized a special fundraising event, bringing together players, families, and community members for a charity football match dedicated to those affected by the disaster. The event reflected the deep connection many Nepalis abroad still feel with their homeland, especially during times of crisis.
The friendly match featured the Red Lions and Blue Samurai, but for participants, the result on the scoreboard mattered far less than the cause they were supporting. In a poignant moment during the game, players from both teams paused competition and gathered for a candlelight tribute to the victims of the floods, honoring those who lost their lives and the families still waiting for news of missing loved ones.

The event raised $2,000 (approximately NPR 302,000), which organizers have donated to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing rescue, relief, and recovery efforts in Nepal.
Organizers said the fundraiser was driven by a simple belief: every donation counts. Whether contributors gave $25, $50, $100, or more, each contribution represented solidarity with flood-affected families and a commitment to helping Nepal rebuild.
“For those watching from thousands of miles away, it is easy to feel powerless in the face of such a tragedy,” organizers noted. “But when a community comes together, even small acts of generosity can make a meaningful difference.”
The success of the event was made possible through the generosity of dozens of supporters who donated and participated. More than a fundraiser, the gathering served as a reminder that when Nepal hurts, Nepalis around the world stand together.
As recovery efforts continue, UNFC hopes the event will inspire others to contribute in whatever way they can, proving that compassion knows no borders and that every contribution helps bring hope to those rebuilding their lives.
