NEW YORK — As Prime Minister Balendra Shah prepares to lead Nepal’s delegation to the United States for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Nepali diaspora in New York is planning a powerful demonstration in solidarity. A special candlelight vigil for Nepal’s flood victims is scheduled for September 24, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, located just outside the United Nations Headquarters. While Prime Minister Shah addresses global leaders inside to highlight pressing national concerns—including climate justice and the recent Bhote Koshi-Trishuli disasters—community members, climate advocates, and diaspora leaders will gather outside to amplify those exact grievances.

The government Cabinet recently approved Prime Minister Shah’s official itinerary, marking his first foreign visit since assuming office. According to government spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel, the high-level delegation departs for the U.S. on September 22 and will return on September 26, with the Prime Minister scheduled to deliver his address on September 24.
The concurrent New York vigil aims to echo this historic diplomatic mission, honoring those affected by devastating natural disasters while demanding international accountability and equitable climate support for vulnerable mountain nations. Organizers are calling on Nepalis, friends of Nepal, and people of goodwill to unite under a shared voice for the community’s future. Participants are strongly encouraged to join, share, and invite others as Nepal takes its message to the world stage.
