Kathmandu \u2013 As Nepal battles one of the most devastating flood disasters in its recent history, internationally renowned tunnel expert Professor Arnold Dix has joined rescue operations aimed at locating missing workers and potential survivors trapped within damaged hydropower infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dix, an Australian geologist, engineer, lawyer, and author, is widely recognized for his leadership during the successful 2023 Uttarakhand tunnel rescue in India, where 41 trapped workers were brought to safety after a complex underground operation. He is also a former president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), the world’s leading organization for tunnel and underground space professionals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his facebook post, Dix described the destruction caused by the recent floods as unprecedented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rescue teams believe there is a possibility that some individuals may have survived by taking refuge inside underground facilities such as service tunnels, powerhouse chambers, and turbine halls. Acting on that hope, Dix has been working closely with Nepalese engineers and tunnel specialists, as well as international experts, to identify and access buried infrastructure concealed beneath massive amounts of mud, rocks, and debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a recent post, Dix praised the progress of Nepal’s rescue teams after they successfully located and exposed a tunnel entrance that had been completely buried by the floods. Rescue crews are now pushing deeper toward affected underground areas despite challenging conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also paid tribute to the workers risking their lives in the search effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
